A distinguished 14ct gold signet ring, set with a finely carved blue sardonyx intaglio depicting an armorial crest. The oval seal is engraved with a quartered shield beneath a knight's helmet and elaborate scrolling mantling, surmounted by a crest of a demi-figure holding an estoile (heraldic star) in one hand and a merchant's mark in the other.
The shield itself is quartered, with the lower half each bearing a repeat of the same merchant's mark—a distinctive symbol resembling the numeral '4' with an extended tail. Merchant's marks were unique personal emblems used by traders and craftsmen from the medieval period onwards, functioning as signatures of identity and ownership long before the adoption of modern trademarks. Their appearance on armorial seals reflects the pride many successful merchant families took in their commercial heritage.
Expertly engraved into layered blue sardonyx, the intaglio was intended to produce a raised impression in sealing wax, combining practical function with personal symbolism. The engraving remains crisp and well defined, showcasing the skill of the lapidary and the quality of the stone.
A superb antique signet ring, crafted in solid 14ct gold, offering a compelling combination of heraldic artistry, historical significance, and timeless style. An excellent addition for collectors of antique signet rings, heraldic jewellery, and fine Victorian or Edwardian gold.
