A substantial Victorian seal dating to c.1860, crafted in 15ct gold and set with a rich red carnelian intaglio. The stone is finely engraved with a heraldic coat of arms, surmounted by a lion crest, creating a particularly striking example of mid-19th century seal jewellery.
The carnelian is cut in a rectangular cushion form and held within a substantial gold mount, leading to an ornate fluted body and sculptural suspension terminal. The intaglio retains impressive detail, with the shield, surrounding mantling and lion clearly defined. Originally intended for impressing a personal crest into sealing wax, pieces such as this were both functional objects and highly personal expressions of family identity.
Presented in excellent antique condition, with the carnelian securely set and the engraving remaining crisp and legible. The 15ct gold mount retains strong definition throughout, with only light age-related wear consistent with over 160 years of history.
