An exceptional antique Victorian 15ct gold seal, beautifully decorated with fine floral chasing around the body and set with an impressive chalcedony agate intaglio to the base. The intaglio is expertly carved with a powerful heraldic scene depicting a falcon in combat with a snake, set above a shield and the Latin motto “Esse Quam Videri.”
Translated as “to be, rather than to seem,” the motto reflects ideals of integrity, authenticity, and virtue over outward appearance. The carving is crisp and deeply cut, showing excellent skill and craftsmanship, and the symbolism gives this seal strong intellectual and moral character typical of the early Victorian period.
Presented in fabulous condition, this seal has an impressive, hefty feel, weighing a substantial 14 grams. Originally intended for sealing wax, it now stands as a highly collectible object, equally appealing to collectors of heraldic seals, antique jewellery, or historical personal objects. A rare and powerful survivor with real presence and history.
