An exceptional Victorian 18ct gold signet ring, the bloodstone face finely carved with an intaglio of a knight's helmet above a heraldic shield featuring demi-crescents. The substantial gold shoulders are beautifully formed as decorative knots with intricate engraved goldwork to each side, adding further refinement to this impressive piece.
This is a ring that was originally made for a specific individual, bearing a heraldic device associated with a particular family. The knight's helmet reflects the heraldic achievement, symbolising lineage and status.
Bloodstone — a dark green variety of chalcedony flecked with red — was one of the preferred materials for heraldic intaglios throughout the Georgian and Victorian periods. Its hardness made it ideal for producing crisp impressions in sealing wax, while its deep green colour provided excellent contrast, allowing the engraved design to stand out clearly.
The knot shoulders are a particularly attractive feature, demonstrating the quality of Victorian goldsmithing by transforming a functional part of the ring into an elegant decorative element. Crafted in rich 18ct gold, the ring has the warm colour and substantial feel so characteristic of fine mid-Victorian jewellery.
