A substantial Victorian seal dating to c.1860, crafted in 18ct gold and set with a richly coloured carnelian intaglio. The seal face is finely engraved with three woodmen, each carrying a shield charged with the Cross of St George and a club over the shoulder, a heraldic device associated with branches of the Wood family.

The carving is exceptionally distinctive, with the three figures arranged across the shield beneath scrolling ornament, producing a crisp and detailed impression in wax. The woodmen motif is a visual play on the Wood name and gives the seal a much stronger heraldic identity than a generic family crest.

The gold mount is equally impressive, with an ornate openwork suspension formed from scrolling curves and finely worked detail around the stone. At 10.37 grams, the seal has a pleasing weight and substantial feel in the hand. The upper eyelet has been reinforced to reduce wear from suspension, and the piece is presented in very good antique condition with age-related wear consistent with its age.
