The lover's knot is one of the oldest symbols in jewellery — two loops intertwined without beginning or end, a declaration of love that cannot be undone. This 18ct gold example dates to c.1880, the knot worked in gold with an old mine cut diamond 0.1ct set at its centre, the stone catching light from within the heart of the design.
The old mine cut diamond — with its high crown, small table and characteristic large culet — produces the soft, warm brilliance typical of Victorian cutting. These stones were cut by hand, for candlelight, and they retain a depth and romance that modern brilliant cuts rarely match.
18ct gold of this period has a richness of colour that later carats do not replicate. The construction is confident and well-made — a piece produced at the height of Victorian goldsmithing.
Very good antique condition. The diamond is bright and secure within the knot setting.
