An exceptional and rare antique 18ct gold pendant, dating to c.1880, crafted in solid, rich yellow gold. The central body features a fine intaglio depicting a proud stag, a shield below with two lions, and the French motto "J’ay bonne cause" translating to "I have good cause". The reverse showcases a raised rope design formed into an elegant infinity-style knot. Ingeniously designed, the piece is secured by a pin clasp that allows the main body to rotate, revealing its secret. The front opens on a discreet hinge to uncover a working compass with a mother-of-pearl face, in perfect working order.
