A finely modelled Victorian 9ct cased gold fob seal, crowned with an elegant scrolling handle and retaining its original engraved white chalcedony intaglio. Designed to hang from an Albert chain, these miniature seals served as both personal signatures and symbols of refinement, with each engraved device carrying its own individual meaning.
The rich gold mount features flowing foliate scrollwork rising to an integral suspension loop, while the base is set with a polished white chalcedony seal engraved with two birds perched upon the rim of a classical birdbath or fountain. Executed in reverse, the intaglio was intended to produce a crisp impression in sealing wax, preserving both its decorative beauty and practical purpose. The contrast between the warm gold and the soft translucency of the chalcedony gives the piece remarkable visual appeal.
Throughout the nineteenth century, fob seals were indispensable accessories, worn alongside pocket watches and used to authenticate letters and documents. Naturalistic scenes such as paired birds symbolised harmony, companionship and enduring affection, making them particularly appropriate for personal seals. Today these pieces are highly sought after, equally at home worn as pendants or displayed as miniature works of glyptic craftsmanship.
