A magnificent antique seal in 9ct yellow gold, set at the base with a large carnelian intaglio carved with a beautifully detailed scene of two hens — one upright, one pecking — rendered with the fine and crisp cutting that characterises the best Victorian seal engraving. The warm orange-red of the carnelian glows beautifully against the gold mount, and the intaglio itself produces a wonderfully clear impression in wax.
The body of the seal is finely crafted with decorative detailing throughout, befitting a piece made for a gentleman or lady of taste and means in mid-Victorian England.
Lovely antique condition. The carnelian intaglio bears a small number of minor surface scratches consistent with age and use, which do not detract from the clarity of the carving or its impression. Gold mount is sound and intact.
A rare and highly collectible mid-Victorian seal of excellent quality — the naturalistic bird scene is particularly appealing and unusual.
