An unusual Victorian bloodstone intaglio seal dating to c.1860, mounted in 9ct rolled gold and engraved with the motto “OLD YET FIRM” surrounding the image of a cut tree stump producing new shoots. The combination forms a particularly evocative rebus, expressing endurance, resilience and continued strength despite age.
The dark bloodstone is cut into a distinctive shield-like form and held within an ornate rolled gold setting, with decorative detailing continuing around the mount and handle. The intaglio remains clearly defined, with the lettering arranged around the central stump and its emerging branches. When impressed into wax, the engraved design would appear in relief and reversed to read correctly.
Presented in very good antique condition with age-related wear consistent with a piece dating to the mid-19th century. A characterful Victorian seal with an unusually direct and enduring message.
