A French locket dating to around 1860, crafted in 800 silver and decorated throughout with intricate niello work. The exterior is covered in a tightly repeated chequered pattern, with the dark niello creating a strong contrast against the silver and continuing across the front, reverse and sides.
The locket opens on a side hinge to reveal its original glazed keepsake compartment, retaining the period glass and inner bezel. The geometric exterior gives the piece a distinctive, almost textile-like surface, while the hidden interior keeps the design practical as well as decorative.
Niello jewellery was particularly valued for the contrast created by dark inlaid decoration against polished silver, and this compact French example shows that technique clearly. Presented in very good antique condition with age-related wear consistent with its age. The hinge functions correctly and the original glass remains present.
