A sterling silver locket hallmarked 1884 with a swallow in flight chased to the front — a motif charged with meaning in Victorian symbolism. The swallow represented loyalty, safe return and hope. Sailors had swallows tattooed as talismans for a safe homecoming. On jewellery, the swallow was given to those departing and to those waiting — a symbol of the certainty of return.
A swallow in flight on the front of a locket — a container for something kept close and personal — is a combination of image and object that speaks directly to the Victorian preoccupation with love, absence and the hope of reunion.
The detailing to front and back is characteristic of Victorian silver locket work of the period, well executed throughout.
