A sterling silver locket with roses chased to the front, hallmarked Birmingham assay office with date letter 'g' for the year 1881 — placing this piece firmly in the middle of the Victorian era, at the height of the fashion for botanical motifs in jewellery.

The rose was the most universally understood symbol of love in the Victorian floral language — given between lovers, worn as a declaration, and chosen for jewellery with deliberate intention. A locket chased with roses was not a generic choice. It was a statement.

The locket is in lovely condition with both inserts present along with glass — a detail worth noting, as original inserts are frequently missing from pieces of this age.
