A substantial Victorian signet ring dating to around 1890, crafted in 14ct gold and set with a two-layer sardonyx intaglio carved with the profile of a collared dog. The darker red-brown layer of the stone has been used to form the animal against the pale upper layer, creating a crisp contrast that makes the carving stand out clearly.
The intaglio is the focus of the ring, with the dog shown in profile with an alert ear, long muzzle and visible collar. The natural banding of the sardonyx gives the carving a strong graphic quality, while the broad gold setting and pierced shoulders give the ring plenty of presence on the hand.
Presented in good antique condition with age-related wear consistent with a ring over a century old. There is some slight surface pitting to the inside of the band, but this is not noticeable when worn. The sardonyx remains securely set and the carving is well defined. The band shows some slight thinning at the reverse, consistent with age and wear.
