An original Victorian heart padlock clasp dating to the late Victorian era, crafted in 15ct gold with the unmistakable heart-shaped form found on antique curb and gate bracelets. The front is styled as a miniature padlock, complete with a pierced keyhole and subtle rivet detailing, giving an otherwise functional fitting considerable character.
The curved arm opens to allow the clasp to be attached and closes securely into the side of the heart. Heart padlocks became a particularly recognisable feature of late Victorian and Edwardian jewellery, combining the symbolism of the heart with the lock as an expression of love and attachment. Today, original 15ct gold examples are increasingly sought after for restoring period bracelets or for repurposing as pendants and charms.
Presented in very good antique condition with light age-related wear. The clasp closes securely and holds firmly when fastened. There is a small amount of movement to the arm when the clasp is open, as expected from age and use, but this does not affect its security once closed.
