A large 15ct gold locket of exceptional quality — One side chased with forget-me-not flowers and fern leaves in detail that rewards close examination, the other carrying a continuous repeating fleur de lis design. This is not decorative work applied quickly to a commercial piece. The level of detail throughout speaks to a maker working at the top of their craft.
Forget-me-nots carried one of the most powerful meanings in the Victorian floral language — remember me, do not forget — while ferns spoke of sincerity, humility and new beginnings. Together on the front of a large locket they make a declaration of lasting, sincere affection. The fleur de lis reverse — a symbol of purity and light — completes the composition with equal care.
15ct gold was an official British standard from 1854 to 1932. Finding it on a locket of this quality places this piece among the finest output of the Victorian period.
