A substantial Victorian spinner seal dated precisely to 1883, crafted in 18ct gold and set with two finely engraved intaglios: carnelian to one side and bloodstone to the other. The carnelian is carved with a rising phoenix above a coronet and the motto “PETIT ALTA”, while the reverse bloodstone carries a detailed heraldic shield beneath a further rising bird crest.
“Petit Alta” translates as “he seeks high things” or “he aims high”, a motto associated in heraldry with aspiration and ambition. The phoenix imagery reinforces that upward-looking theme, making the engraved side particularly striking both visually and symbolically. The motto is also documented in British heraldry, including with the Abercromby family.
The double-sided stone spins freely within its open 18ct gold frame, allowing either engraved face to be displayed. The original 18ct gold jump ring remains attached, and the combination of substantial weight, crisp heraldic carving and precisely dated Birmingham hallmarks makes this a particularly appealing Victorian fob.
