A distinctive Victorian seal dating to c.1860, crafted in 9ct gold and set with a finely engraved carnelian intaglio. The seal depicts a seated spotted leopard beneath the Latin motto “MAGNUM IN PARVO”, creating a memorable heraldic design with strong period character.
The motto translates as “greatness in little” or “a great deal in a small space”, which suits the scale of the seal particularly well. The warm red carnelian gives the engraving excellent contrast, allowing both the leopard and lettering to remain clearly visible and producing a crisp impression in wax.
The gold mount has a sculptural arched form with engraved radiating detail around the body and a substantial suspension eyelet above. At 7.6 grams, it has a pleasing weight in the hand and is presented in very good antique condition with age-related wear consistent with its age.
The heraldic combination of leopard and the motto “MAGNUM IN PARVO” — “Much in little” — is closely associated with branches of the Little family, where the phrase works as a clever play on the surname. It gives the seal an especially strong sense of identity, while the crisp carnelian engraving preserves the design beautifully.
