A striking Victorian pendant dating to c.1860, crafted in 9ct gold and formed from four substantial cabochon garnets arranged as a stylised flower. The deep wine-red stones have a rich, glowing colour in the light, with their smooth domed surfaces giving the piece a strong sculptural presence.
Resting across the centre is a finely modelled silver fly, set with old cut diamonds to the wings and small garnet cabochons for the eyes. The contrast between the silver insect and the warm gold setting is particularly effective, while the diamonds add small flashes of light against the deeper red garnets. The four larger garnets are estimated at 15ct combined.
Insect jewellery became a recognised part of Victorian naturalistic design, reflecting the period's fascination with the natural world. Flies, beetles, butterflies, spiders and other insects were recreated in precious metals and gemstones, often with an impressive level of detail. This example brings that theme together with the floral garnet cluster in a particularly unusual and decorative way.
Presented in very good antique condition with age-related wear consistent with its age. The garnets remain securely set, the fly retains its diamond and garnet details and the suspension eyelet is intact.
