A striking antique Victorian book chain necklace dating to around 1880, crafted in sterling silver and combining articulated folded links with a series of larger engraved decorative panels. The construction gives the necklace a distinctly architectural quality, characteristic of the elaborate silver chains fashionable during the later Victorian period.
The larger 12mm panels are finely engraved with scrolling foliate decoration and finished with scalloped edges, while the narrower 7mm links create a rhythmic articulated chain between them. Measuring 18.25 inches in length, the necklace sits neatly around the neckline and retains its traditional circular spring ring clasp.
Presented in very good antique condition with light age-related wear and patina consistent with its age. The engraved decoration remains crisp, the articulated links move freely and the clasp functions securely.
