An unusual First World War-era lucky charm dating to c.1914-1918, crafted in 9ct gold and centred with the distinctive wooden “Touch Wud” figure. The rounded wooden body is given a simple face, while the articulated gold arms and legs wrap around it to form the instantly recognisable novelty design.
“Touch Wud” charms became popular good-luck talismans during the First World War and were often given to soldiers by sweethearts, family members and loved ones as tokens of protection and safe return. The wooden figure played directly on the superstition of “touching wood” for luck, turning a familiar phrase into a small object that could be carried close at hand.
This example retains the wording “TOUCH WUD” around the reverse and is stamped '9CT' throughout the gold fittings, giving it particularly strong period character.
Presented in very good antique condition with age-related wear consistent with its age. The wooden centre retains its original surface character, the gold limbs remain intact and the suspension ring is securely attached.
