An Art Deco butterfly wing pendant dating to c.1920, crafted in sterling silver and centred with a miniature painted figural scene over vivid blue butterfly wing. The iridescent wing creates an intense turquoise and violet backdrop, changing noticeably with the light and giving the small painted scene far more depth than a conventional enamel or painted panel.
The scene appears to show two figures in period dress, white, yellow and purple against the shimmering wing beneath. A silver border frames the composition, keeping the focus firmly on the colour and movement at the centre.
Butterfly wing jewellery became particularly fashionable during the Art Deco period, with the naturally iridescent wing used beneath reverse-painted scenes to create an almost luminous effect. Presented in very good vintage condition with light age-related wear consistent with its age.
