An unusual Art Deco sterling silver butterfly wing pendant dating to around the 1930s, featuring a painted scene of a woman beside water within a dark tropical landscape. Iridescent butterfly wing is incorporated beneath the scene, creating vivid flashes of blue through the night sky and water as the pendant catches the light.
The figure is depicted in draped clothing within a stylised landscape, characteristic of the romantic and atmospheric imagery found in decorative jewellery of the Art Deco period. The natural iridescence of the butterfly wing is particularly effective against the predominantly dark background, while the large teardrop-shaped silver setting is finished with a decorative beaded border.
The reverse is stamped “SILVER” together with patent number “PAT. 202913”. Presented in good antique condition with age-related surface wear and some wear to the painted decoration. An atmospheric Art Deco piece combining miniature painted decoration with the changing colour of natural butterfly wing.
