A striking Art Deco sterling silver butterfly wing pendant dating to c.1930, depicting an elegantly dressed woman standing beside water. The scene is hand painted over the naturally iridescent butterfly wing, its vivid blue colouring forming the woman's dress and the water below, changing in intensity as the pendant catches the light.
The rectangular silver mount has a finely beaded border, framing the miniature scene beneath a clear protective panel. These butterfly wing jewels became particularly fashionable during the Art Deco period, using the extraordinary natural colour of the wing to create luminous miniature pictures.
The reverse is stamped "ENGLAND STERLING" together with patent number "PT 202213". A distinctive and highly wearable example of Art Deco butterfly wing jewellery, retaining strong colour and detail throughout.
