A remarkable example of Thomas L. Mott's celebrated butterfly wing jewellery, this Art Deco sterling silver pendant captures a tranquil tropical shoreline beneath swaying palm trees. Created using iridescent butterfly wing beneath crystal, the scene comes alive as it catches the light, shifting through luminous shades of turquoise and emerald.
The teardrop-shaped panel is finely framed in sterling silver with a delicate engraved border and suspended from a floral surmount, balancing naturalistic detail with the clean lines synonymous with the Art Deco period. Thomas L. Mott perfected this distinctive technique, producing miniature landscapes that remain instantly recognisable and highly collectible today.
Dating to the Art Deco era, butterfly wing jewellery became one of the defining fashions of the 1920s and 1930s. Mott's work is particularly sought after, with each hand-assembled scene offering a unique combination of artistry, craftsmanship and the remarkable natural iridescence of butterfly wing.
The pendant remains in excellent antique condition. The butterfly wing retains vibrant colour with no noticeable fading, and the sterling silver mount is free from damage, presenting exceptionally well for its age.
