A vintage sterling silver oval locket dating to 1975, decorated with applied floral and foliate detail and two small faceted garnets set at the centres of the flowers. The softly brushed front contrasts with the polished raised decoration, giving the design depth while retaining a clean, understated appearance.
The reverse is engraved with the word “MIZPAH”, a Hebrew word meaning “watchtower” and traditionally associated in jewellery with loved ones separated by distance. Mizpah jewellery became especially popular during the Victorian period as a sentimental token of affection and protection, with the tradition continuing into the 20th century.
The locket opens at the side and is finished with a substantial pendant bail. Presented in very good vintage condition with light age-related wear consistent with its age.
